7-13-2009  thur 7-18-2009 TCS World Series

FRIDAY 7-17:  The teams first game of the day was against Mystic from San Diego, CA.  At the end of the 1st inning the team took the lead 6 - 0.  However, after some big hits from Mystic and some costly errors the game was tied 6 - 6 by the time we came up to bat in the bottom of the 2nd inning.  Each team continued to add runs but Mystic came out ahead with a final score of 8 - 10.  Our next opponent was a familiar one....Delta Diamonds.  We knew this was going to be a tough game.  It was very tight the whole way with score ending up tied at the end of the 7th inning.  With the international tie breaker in effect Delta Diamonds scored in the top of the 8th.  We managed to score as well to end up tied again.  Delta Diamonds scored again in the top of the 9th and we managed to tie the game once again.  In the top of the 10th the Delta Diamonds scored but we were unable to manufacture a run and suffered a 10 inning 1 run loss.  The team finished with record of 4 wins and 3 losses.  The three teams that we lost to ended up placing 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the GOLD bracket and all of those losses were very close games and could have gone either way.  We are proud of how the girls played at the TCS World Series and they showed that they can compete with the best of them.

THURSDAY 7-16: This was the start of the double elimination tournament and our first opponent was Delta Diamonds from Brentwood, CA.  The energy was very high as both teams came out ready to go.  Shock Wave put together a very impressive game.  E-Lo provided solid pitching and with the help of good team defense held a very good team to only 2 runs.  Great hitting from McKenna, Courtney and Dani along with timely steals from Allyssa and Marisa helped the team score big.  The final score was 6 - 2.

WEDNESDAY 7-15: Pool play continued with a game against Mizuno USA.  After a team meeting and a solid warm up the team came out ready to play.  Allyssa started off with a walk, Marisa also drew a walk and then Courtney blasted a homerun over the left field fence to score 3.  The team scored again in the 3rd inning when Dani got on base and then McKenna hit a single to bring her in.  In the 5th inning Dani hit a double.  Then with 2 outs Courtney came up and with a 2 - 0 count the Mizuno pitcher put another one over the plate and Courtney blasted her 2nd homerun scoring another 2 runs.  The team wasn't finished as Allyssa scored again in the 6th inning.  E-Lo came very close to pitching a shut out.  Bases were loaded twice but she was able to get out without a single run each time with the help of some timely solid team defense.  The final score was 6 - 1.  Elk Grove Bomb Squad was our next opponent.  In the 2nd inning E-Lo got on 1st on an error then Kelsey drew a walk then Mychelle drew a walk.  With bases loaded Ashley B. came up big with a hit over the right fielders head to score 3.  The team put up another 2 runs in the 3rd as Marisa stole 2 bases and then Courtney hit her in with a double.  Then McKenna delivered another key hit to score Courtney .  Courtney scored again in the 5th inning after hitting her 2nd double of the game.  Allyssa pitched very well holding our opponent to only 1 run through 5 innings.  In the 6th and final inning Bomb Squad started off with a walk, a double and then another walk to load the bases with no outs.  The next hitter hit a ball up the middle and when the dust settled Shock Wave logged their 1st out by throwing the hitter out at 2nd but only after 3 runs scored.  With a tight score of 6 - 4 Allyssa kept her cool and retired the next 2 batters including an exciting game ending strike out.  The team ended up with a record of 3 -1 and finished 2nd in pool play.  The team was able to achieve it's goal of reaching the GOLD BRACKET for the double elimination tournament.

TUESDAY 7-14:  Pool play started with Shock Wave facing So Cal Nitro.  Dani provided 3 1/2 innings of great pitching and then E-Lo came in to finish the job as the team came away with a 6 - 3 victory.  The team had key hits from Ashley G, Kelsey, Dani and Courtney as each of them had 1 RBI.  McKenna went 3 for 4 and had 2 RBI's!!!  Dani also went 3 for 4.  Our next pool game was against Xtreme.  This game was tight with Shock Wave leading with a score of 3 - 2 at the end of 5 innings.  But Xtreme put up another 3 runs in the final 2 innings to win the game.  Shock Wave struggled as they had 4 errors, 5 walks and 4 past balls with runners on base.

MONDAY 7-13: Shock Wave participated in the skills challenge and had a great showing.  The team had the top three in the SPEED & ACCURACY competition with Marisa placing 1st throwing 66 MPH, Ashley Godfrey placing 2nd throwing 65 MPH and E-Lo placing 3rd throwing 64 MPH.  The TCS Staff were amazed at the performance of these girls.  The team went on to place 2nd in the QUICKEST INFIELD thanks to a great performance by Ashley Bush (Catcher), Mychelle (SS), Kelsey (1st), McKenna (3rd) and Allyssa (2nd).  Later in the day the team participated in the TCS parade and showed their colors and team spirit.  Marisa added a few impressive back handsprings and delighted the crowd.

6-21-2009 ASA Summer Breeze 16U

Shock Wave was one of 4 teams entered into the tournament.  This gave the team the opportunity to play up in the 16U division against teams that they have not faced yet.  Their first opponent in pool play was AZ Cien.  After a tough first inning defensively the team settled in and took care of business and finished strong with an 8 - 3 victory.  As usual E-lo did a great job on the mound. The next opponent was Lil' Saints.  With a tight 4 - 2 lead late in the game there was a passed ball and a Lil'Saints player attempted to steal home.  The player was called out but during the tag there was a collision with our catcher Courtney Stoll that caused the player to become unconscious for a few minutes.  Paramedics came and took the player away and we learned afterwards that she was fine and she suffered a mild concussion to the back of the head.  When play resumed Lil' Saints put two more runs on the board to tie the score going into the last inning.  Shock Wave responded with some timely hits including a big shot from Kelsey Anderson to take the lead for good and coming away with a 5 - 4 victory.  Shock Wave continued to pile up the offense as they beat Goodyear Stingers 17 - 1 to finish 3 - 0 in pool play and the 1st seed for the single elimination tournament.  On Sunday Shock Wave played solid softball with an 8 - 0 victory over Goodyear Stingers.  This led to a game with AZ Cien for the championship.  AZ Cien came out strong by scoring in the first inning but Shock Wave elevated their defense and remained patient with their hitting.  Allyssa Sanchez was hit by a pitch late in the game and then she put her speed on display by stealing 2nd, 3rd and home to give Shock Wave the lead for good.  The final score was 4 - 1 giving Shock Wave their 7th Championship for the 2008/2009 season.

5-3-2009 USSSA Cinco de Mayo 14U

Shock Wave started pool play with a narrow victory over the QC Lady Cats.  After quickly falling behind the team stayed focused and worked their way back to a 5 - 4 win.  The team went on to beat Desert Prowlers 16 - 2 and then finished the day with a loss to EV Titans 4 - 5.  The single elimination started with a rematch against EV Titans.  The game was very close most of the way but a key hit from Allyssa Sanchez helped the team move on to the next round with a victory of 3 - 0.  Our next opponent was the QC Lady Cats and on this day they were not going to be taken lightly.  Shock Wave put together an impressive game and moved on to the championship game with an 8 - 0 victory.  The championship was a show down with the 95 AZ Outlaws.  Up to this point in the season each team had come away with a victory against each other but Shock Wave would not be denied.  The team caught fire in the first inning and took control the rest of the way with a 9 - 1 victory.  Pitching and team defense was incredible on elimination day as the team gave up only 1 run in 3 games.  Hitting was very solid on the final day as the team outscored their opponents 20 - 1 and run ruled their last 2 opponents!!! This was the 6th tournament championship for Shock Wave.

3-1-2009 TCS Hit it Hard 14U A

Shock Wave got off to a rough start on Saturday losing to Hot Shots - Spring Team & Outlaws '95 and ending up with a tie against Quicksilver.  It was one of those rare days where the team wasn't quite clicking as they struggled defensively and the offense wasn't producing like it usually does.  The brightspot of the day was outstanding pitching by Kayla.  Sunday was a whole new day and the team started off by winning a close one against Outlaws '95 thanks to a huge homerun by Ashley G., a home run by Kelsey and solid pitching by Kayla.  Then the bats exploded against Quicksilver as the score was 10 - 0 after just two innings.  E-Lo, Courtney, Ashley G, Dani, Allyssa and Sarah all hit homeruns thanks to 300' fences and hard hit line drives through the gaps.  The game ended with a score of 13 - 5 and Shock Wave came away with their 4th Championship of the season.
